I Only Want Jesus in My Life (from the 2000 Christmas Episode of “Away in England”) – FAWM Song

The song: This song was featured in the controversial Christmas 2000 episode of the fictional TV show “Away in England“. In that particular episode, Lydia Morrison (the main character) and her friends Preston Howard and Ashley Slater are upset to know that their fellow (magical) classmates don’t know what the true meaning of Christmas is. To combat this, Preston (a self-professed Christian) declares that he will only have one thing for Christmas, and that is for everyone he knows to have a personal relationship with Jesus, which is unheard of in wizarding England.

Plus, the song received many downloads the first week it debuted, it crashed the show’s website.

Preston Howard: Why should it matter what you want for Christmas? All you’re asking for is material things. Do you really think that toys and video games will make you happy or bring you joy? Plus, why would you put your Christmas wishes into the hands of an old fat man who drives a sleigh, plays with elves, and prefers children over adults? (kids protest)

Lydia Morrison: OK, Preston, what do you want for Christmas?

Preston: I’ll tell you. (Five girls (played by Deirdre Dara, Candy Cane Brenner, Andrea Marshall, Kierra Ashley, and Queenetta Carroll) wearing Santa dresses come out and start dancing. Music starts playing.)

You can keep your Christmas trees and you can keep your pretty ornaments, because that kind of thing just isn’t for me. You can keep your tinsel and you can keep your Christmas carols, because to me, that’s not what Christmas is all about

You can forget about me decorating Christmas trees and you can forget about taking me on shopping sprees. Santa isn’t coming down my chimney. You may think I’m crazy but that’s not what I want. But you may not like what I’m wishing for, but this is what I really want…

I don’t want no toys or video games, and I don’t want the newest books and I don’t want the latest clothes, I only want Jesus in my life; I don’t care for the latest hit songs and I don’t want to watch any movies in theaters, I only want Jesus in my life!

You think you like that certain toy now, but what you don’t know is that you’ll eventually outgrow that toy and you’ll be throwing it away. But I have something new to offer you, something that you’ll never outgrow, something you can never throw away, something that you can have for the rest of your life…

I don’t want no toys or video games, and I don’t want the newest books and I don’t want the latest clothes, I only want Jesus in my life; I don’t care for the latest hit songs and I don’t want to watch any movies in theaters, I only want Jesus in my life!

(Lydia) So let me understand this, because I’m a bit confused here: you say there’s only one thing you want and you don’t care about getting any gifts because you think gift-giving is nothing more than being greedy and ungrateful? What’s wrong with wanting toys for Christmas? they exist only for your enjoyment, so why would you want to trade your toys for something that doesn’t come gift-wrapped in a box?

(Preston) Because Jesus is the only thing that I want to have; he can bring you everlasting life and set you free from your sins. Jesus died for you and me, he loves all of us, as you can see; to reject the gift of salvation that he offers you is to be a fool, and I’m nobody’s fool…

And if you think that all you need is the latest stuff to get through a life that’s tough, well I’ve got news for you; that way of thinking is not going to get you anywhere. So set aside your Christmas lists and join me as I proclaim that Jesus is the savior of the world, and his love and sacrifice is all you’ll ever need!

I don’t want no toys or video games, and I don’t want the newest books and I don’t want the latest clothes, I only want Jesus in my life; I don’t care for the latest hit songs and I don’t want to watch any movies in theaters, I only want Jesus in my life!

I don’t want no toys or video games, and I don’t want the newest books and I don’t want the latest clothes, I only want Jesus in my life; I don’t care for the latest hit songs and I don’t want to watch any movies in theaters, I only want Jesus in my life! (Applause and cheers break out)
